Keum Boo

10am - 6pm

Keum-boo is an ancient Korean gilding technique used to apply thin sheets of gold to silver. The technique is accomplished by first depleting a surface of sterling silver to bring up a thin layer of fine silver. Then 24 carat gold foil is applied with heat and pressure to produce a permanent diffusion bond.

This one-day workshop will take you through the fundamentals of the process. You will design and make a pendant in sterling silver sheet, onto which the gold foil will be applied, creating a finished piece for you to take away with you at the end of the day.

You will be provided with some sterling silver sheet and 24ct gold foil from which to create your design and have access to various different tools for cutting, shaping, forming and texturing the pendant before applying gold to the surface. The possibilities are endless!

  • This workshop requires some knowledge of basic jewellery techniques including piercing, filing and annealing (and soldering if your design requires it).

  • If you have a specific project in mind please contact us to discuss it further (this may incur an additional charge for materials).

  • Maximum class size of 6 people.

  • This workshop runs at various times throughout the year on either a Friday or Saturday. Please contact us for more information and to book your place.

For health & safety reasons sensible footwear should be worn in the studio and long hair must be tied back. Please bear in mind that jewellery making can be messy so wear suitable clothing.
